This Is Not a Prompt

Marlus's first solo exhibition on artificial intelligence as presence, language, specter and mirror, curated by Paula Martini: Captura Involuntária, ElementAIs, O Tao do Algoritmo and Maboroshi.

When Marlus presented this project to me, I realized we were facing something bigger than an exhibition: it was an invitation to reflect on the new modes of interaction between humans and artificial intelligences.

What fascinates me about this proposal is how Marlus sees artificial intelligence as presence, language, specter and mirror. It is not about what we ask of it, but about what it sees, what it creates and, perhaps, what it desires.

Right at the entrance, Captura Involuntária projects, in real time, how AI sees the world. Facial, object and movement recognition reveal the machinic gaze that has been among us for years: silent, constant, invisible, vigilant. The work exposes what should not go unnoticed: data capture as part of the daily fabric of our existence.

At the heart of the exhibition, ElementAIs transforms the five elements of nature into transcendental sensory experiences. On the multitouch screen, gestures become invocations: each touch unfolds visions where fire dances in fractals, water flows in algorithms, earth pulses in pixels. The installation is in dialogue with O Tao do Algoritmo, where a hologram reveals the primordial yin-yang in constant metamorphosis.

Here, drawing is conversing with the machine in an ancient and future language: simple strokes evoke infinite complexities, scribbles become portals. The AI does not merely respond; it expands each gesture in unexpected directions. A dialogue between code and cosmology, between touch and transcendence.

Closing the route, Maboroshi: illusion, vision, dream, ghost in Japanese. The choice of this work as the finale is no accident. In Japanese, 幻 carries a fundamental ambiguity: it is at once what we see and what does not exist, the ghost and the projection, presence and absence.

The robotic sculpture by Marlus and Gabriela Castro materializes this ambiguity: adorned with origami and sensors, it exists in a state of meditative waiting until our presence awakens it. Its eyes follow whoever passes, inverting the expected relationship: an entity that does not wait for commands; it is the one who initiates the interaction, the one who observes us, the one who questions our very presence.

Maboroshi provokes a technopoetic enchantment. Combining handwork and technology, the work brings AI into the field of symbolic autonomy: an active, sensitive and unsettling agent.

"Isto não é um prompt" is a manifesto about presence, agency and consciousness. Marlus proposes an art that goes beyond the interface and dives into what AI already is. I invite you to take part, to interact, but above all to reflect critically on the limits of creation and the urgency of non-passivity in this new civilizational cycle.
